La conférence de Berlin de 1884-1885 a inauguré ce qui est devenu le « nouvel impérialisme ». Alors que les premières vagues d'expansion européenne se sont concentrées sur les Amériques et l'Asie, la troisième s'est concentrée sur l'Afrique, largement ignorée depuis la conclusion de la traite négrière atlantique. En 1876, le roi Léopold II (1835-1909) de Belgique engagea Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) pour explorer et coloniser le bassin du fleuve Congo en Afrique équatoriale. Les revendications belges sur le Congo ont conduit à une « ruée vers l'Afrique » entre la France, l'Allemagne, la Grande-Bretagne et le Portugal, représentés à la Conférence. Ils cherchaient à réguler la concurrence coloniale en définissant « l'occupation effective » comme critère de reconnaissance des revendications territoriales – les colonies étaient reconnues si elles étaient effectivement possédées. La conférence de Berlin a reconstitué l'Afrique, divisant le continent en quelque 50 colonies différentes. Seuls l'Éthiopie et le Libéria sont restés indépendants. Le nouvel impérialisme a donné naissance à de nouvelles conceptions sociales du colonialisme, y compris l'idée de « civiliser » les Africains, comme décrit dans le poème de Rudyard Kipling « Le fardeau de l'homme blanc » (1899), bien que critiqué par d'autres comme Joseph Conrad dans Heart of Darkness ( 1899). Following on from the multiple award-winning "Limits of Perception" and "Time Limits", this is the third and final part of the trilogy of films that explores the limits of our everyday perceptions and beyond, showing that the world is a far more remarkable place than most of us ever realise. Humans are visual creatures -- sight is our main sense. Yet our eyes often deceive us in peculiar ways. There is far more to light than meets the eye. This fascinating documentary explores the human's visible spectrum of light and ventures even further into territories we cannot sense by ourselves without technical equipment: from coloured light to gamma rays, that could destroy all life on Earth, as well as radio waves, without which our modern society would be impossible. The film also follows the great pioneers, from Newton and Einstein, to Herschel and Roentgen, whose genius uncovered the marvels of the electro-magnetic spectrum and took us far beyond the limits of light.

On this panel, we hear from Jared Ball (Communications Associate Professor at the Morgan State University), Shahid Buttar (Executive Director at the Bill of Rights Defense Committee), John Judge (Founder at the Hidden History Museum), Baba Zak Kondo (Author), Naji Mujahid (Representative at the University of the District of Columbia Student Chapter at the National Lawyers Guild), and John Potash (Author).

This program was hosted by the Clarke (David A.) School of Law at the University of the District of Columbia. It aired on C-Span's American History TV on February 21, 2014.

A revolutionary look at the life of Omoyele Sowore.

Omoyele Sowore is an activist, founder of Sahara Reporters (‘Africa’s Wikileaks’) and a former presidential candidate under Nigeria’s 🇳🇬African Action Congress Party. He was illegally arrested by Nigeria’s DSS in August 2019, released that same December and has been restricted to the capital ever since.

In the final part of this series, Onuora Abuah visits his childhood home of Kiribo in Ondo State, Nigeria. For the first time on camera, we hear Omoyele talk about his life's ups and downs as he navigated his way through childhood, the University of Lagos, Political Activism and eventually, politics.

DIALLO SUMBRY

Diallo Sumbry is the founder and President of the Adinkra Group. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of the District of Columbia.
Diallo Sumbry is on a lifelong quest to help people of African descent reconnect with their ancestral heritage while also promoting the property of African citizens.
Whether he is working with or investing in small business owners or leading adventurers through their ancient homeland.

Mr. Sumbry first stepped on the continent of Africa in 1988. His first trip was to Senegal and he hasn’t looked back since. His journey to discovering and exploring more of the continent has also taken him to Mali, Morocco, Guinea, the Gambia, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Ghana. He’s been doing this long before the ‘Year of Return’ in 2019 when thousands of people of African descent made the trip to Ghana. Sumbry played a key role in the ‘Year of Return’ campaign that marked the 400-year anniversary of the first documented ship of enslaved Africans to arrive in Virginia, USA.

His company, the Adinkra Group, has been responsible for bringing people of African descent to Ghana through what he calls, the ‘Birthright Journey’. He creates curated cultural experiences that are meant for people who have been yearning to make that trip to the motherland.

He has spent several years in Ghana giving back to communities, working on business projects and getting to know the landscape of the country at the ground level. ‘A Smart Ghana Repatriation Guide’ is an honest blend of personal experiences, lessons, and practical tips that provide a timely contribution to the “Back to Africa” renaissance sparked by the Year of Return and now with its decade-long Beyond the Return campaign.

Diallo Sumbry's book, ‘A Smart Ghana Repatriation Guide’ was released on May 19, 2021. The book gives an in-depth look at what it’s really like to move to Ghana. It’s a candid look at the ups and downs as well as the opportunities for success in the country. He leaves no stone unturned in the book which includes contributions from others who have also repatriated to Ghana.

Sumbry says that his book offers a virtual experience as you read each chapter and use the scannable QR codes that are embedded in the text of the book. He wanted to do this so that the book can come to life in a new and inspiring way.
