Ghana says it wants to remove Gandhi statue from campus

Ghana says it wants to remove Gandhi statue from campus

Ghana has expressed its intention to remove a statue of Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi from a university in the capital, citing a controversy over what critics call his "racist identity."

Professors at the University of Ghana launched a petition last month calling for the removal of the statue, which was unveiled by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee during a visit in June.

Ghana's foreign affairs ministry said the government "would ... want to relocate the statue from the University of Ghana to ensure its safety."

Obadele Kambon, one of the petition's organizers, said Thursday there was no confirmation the statue would be removed.

Gandhi, a lawyer, lived for two decades in South Africa. The petition quotes writings from that period in which he refers to black South Africans as savages.

Water is in short supply in much of the world - but what if we use seawater? It's been a dream for many years, but now technology is making it possible. This new seawater greenhouse uses a clever cardboard design to distill fresh water from salt water cheaply and efficiently. It's helping grow crops in Somaliland, and could help stop the water crisis in Africa and other parts of the world that are susceptible to drought. The founder of Seawater Greenhouse, Charlie Paton, explains how unlike traditional greenhouses - which are hothouses - this one is a "cool house" that is ideal for growing temperate crops in deserts or other hot, arid regions. What do you think? Will this succeed at turning desert into farmland? What other projects have caught your eye?

Come venture deep inside the world’s biggest physics machine, the Large Hadron Collider. This extraordinary feat of human engineering took 16 years and $10 billion to build, and just weeks ago began colliding particles at energies unseen since a fraction of a second after the big bang. We’ll explore this amazing apparatus that could soon reveal clues about nature’s fundamental laws and even the origin of the universe itself. John Hockenberry moderates a discussion among physicists including Marcela Carena, Monica Dunford, Jennifer Klay and Nobel laureate Frank Wilczek.

This program is part of The Big Idea Series, made possible with support from the John Templeton Foundation.

Human rights groups say as many as 500,000 West Papuans have been killed since Indonesia took over the territory nearly 50 years ago. Despite being constantly tracked by authorities, this report unearths stories of recent torture and killings. A camera smuggled into a prison reveals a man jailed for 15 years for hoisting the flag of independence. "They use the Subversion Law as a license to kill - it's evil."
