Made by leading Ugandan documentarist Nathan Ochole, this film explains what agroforestry is and the myriad of contributions that it has made to Uganda. It starts in the highlands of Kabale, where trees on farms prevented landslides and floods, provided fruit to villagers and made their agriculture more sustainable. It then roams to the parklands of northern Uganda where Borassus palms and Shea trees provide valuable nutrition and cash earnings (particularly for women in the case of Shea) and improve the yields of the crops grown near them. It visits Kapchorwa where we see the use of the nitrogen-fixing shrub Calliandra as feed for dairy cows and then documents the improvements that orange trees have made to livelihoods in Namatumba.

Along the way, the film interviews farmers as well as Dr Clement Okia, the representative of the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Uganda, and Dr Hilary Agaba, Programme Leader Agroforestry at Uganda’s National Forestry Resources Research Institute (NaFORRI NARO). It was produced by Cathy Watson, formerly of Tree Talk and Muvle Trust in Uganda and now Head of Programme Development at ICRAF, and by Australian AVID volunteer, Laura Keenan.

The Danube, one of the most remarkable rivers in Europe, contains many secrets. Not just underwater, but also along its course through Austria. In one small section of in Lower Austria the body of water has an infl uence on the surrounding landscape, which has even formed its own microclimate. One speaks of so-called "heat islands" with temperatures that reach nearly Mediterranean levels. Human beings have created a cultural landscape oriented to viticulture over a period of millennia. This is because the warm loess and clay soil promotes the flourishing of grapevines. However, not only crop plants grow there: since primeval times, flora and fauna have settled here that have no rival in Europe. They are all species that live on the slopes of the Danube mainly due to the mild temperatures, and which are often found nowhere else. This documentary follows in the tracks of the widest variety of creatures in the Mediterranean section of the Danube. Among others, the largest lizar, the largest snake in Central Europe, the western green lizard and the Aesculapian snake will be encountered; the audience is invited to take part in the family life of ground squirrels, learn that the heat islands even have their own local species of scorpion, and encounter the praying mantis, the saga pedo or the wasp spider. However, not only the animal kingdom is fascinating. Many fi eld orchids, which are threatened with extinction almost everywhere else, find a final refuge on the slopes of the Wachau Valley. The most colourful European bird, the bee-eater, still broods here in the last remaining colonies. The entire region was named a World Natural and Cultural Heritage Site in 2000.

On the 15th February 1965, after an extensive tour of the African continent, Omowale Malcolm X was scheduled to deliver The Program of his new formation, the Organisation of Afro-American Unity (OAAU). This presentation was postponed due to a fire bombing of his family home.

The rescheduled date was 21st February - which would become the fateful day that our "living Black Manhood" paid the ultimate price for African Liberation.

The mark of a great leader is that they leave a well defined program for those who come after them. The program of the OAAU is the result of much study of the African World, beginning with the conditions of Africans in America. It was penned by the illustrious Baba John Henrik Clarke, in consultation with Omowale Malcolm X, his big sister Ella Collins and others in the OAAU Leadership.

Due to mass revisionism of the life & legacy of Omowale Malcolm X, this document, along with his OAAU founding rally speeches are woefully under appreciated. Together, they reveal his very clear Black Nationalist Pan-Afrikanist Orientation and pragmatic approach to solving the problems of African people the world over.

We share this now, in the hope to shine a light on the legacy of Papa Omowale and the powerful spirit of the organisation he was in the process of building. Listen to the clarity of perspective; the practicality of the program; and its enduring relevance to us in todays world.
