The Southern Conference Education Fund (SCEF) annual dinner held in Louisville honored Ella Baker, who has worked for many years behind the scenes in the civil rights movement. Speakers Anne Braden, Bob Zellner, Stokely Carmichael, H. Rap Brown, Karen Mulloy, and Howard Zinn, and emcee Floyd McKissick speak about Baker's contribution to the civil rights movement. Ella Baker speaks for the last portion of the broadcast about the importance of SCEF and the need to link the struggles for civil rights and civil liberties, ending poverty, and ending the Vietnam War. She stated that as a society we need to ask what is behind a number of current concerns: the war, urban rioting, black separatism, the recent arrest of Brown on charges of arson and inciting a riot in Cambridge, Maryland, and the trend toward repressive actions against those resisting war, racist repressions, poverty, and those exercising freedom of speech.

For the first time in 42 years, a camera enters Southern Libya in what was forbidden territory under the Gaddafi regime.

Shortly after Gaddafi’s demise, we accompany members of the disgraced Tabu tribe along the road to their impoverished desert territory near the Algeria-Niger-Chad borders 1000 Km from Tripoli.

The ancient coastal city of Gedi, Kenya—a pre-colonial 11th-century trading hub built by Persian and later Arab settlers—boasted palaces, mosques, and advanced infrastructure before its mysterious 17th-century abandonment. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its ruins face threats from climate change and neglect, mirroring risks to Africa’s few protected sites. UNESCO’s Nairobi conference highlighted armed conflicts (Ukraine, Mali) and disasters (Uganda’s fire) as escalating dangers. Archaeologist George Abungu stressed that heritage preservation must prioritise local values over mere UNESCO listings. Gedi’s caretakers work to safeguard its "mystical beauty," though much of its history remains lost. The site underscores Africa’s underrepresented global heritage amid growing crises.
