How Cuban Agriculture went from Industrial to Sustainable
How Cuban Agriculture went from Industrial to Sustainable Ambakisye-Okang Dukuzumurenyi 25 Views • 5 years ago

In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at the history of Cuban sustainable agriculture and farming. Specifically, I look at why sustainable and organic methods, such as urban farms and market gardens, proliferated in Cuban farming, and what that might mean for farmers markets and local food systems in countries like the United States. Some of the principles of Cuban agriculture could be used to build a system in opposition to our current industrial food and factory farm system.

Guinea's President Who Stood Up to France | Ahmed Sékou Touré
Guinea's President Who Stood Up to France | Ahmed Sékou Touré Ambakisye-Okang Dukuzumurenyi 46 Views • 5 years ago

On 2 October 1958, Guinea became the first of France’s colonial territories in Sub-Saharan Africa to declare its independence in an act of defiance against its former colonial master.

Ahmed Sekou Toure, known as a charismatic and radical figure in Africa's post-colonial history, was the leader of the country at the time and he was driving this rebellion by the former French Colony.

However, Guinea and Sekou Toure, achieved this status of independence against the wishes of its former colonial master, France, and afterwards the nation faced an onslaught of administrative and diplomatic assault by the French which seemed to have been designed to drive the country to its knees.

The french colonial elite in Paris got so furious with Sekou Toure’s defiance, such that in an act of fury the french administration in Guinea destroyed everything in the country which represented what they called the benefits from french colonization.

After this whole fiasco, Toure would go on to rule the country of Guinea for 26 years, and his time in power and legacy divided opinions.

In this episode of African Biographics, we look at the life and legacy of Ahmed Sekou Toure, Guinea’s first president who stood up to the French, and his time in power as the leader of that country.

The Opioid Crisis Sweeping Africa | The War on Drugs - 2021
The Opioid Crisis Sweeping Africa | The War on Drugs - 2021 Ambakisye-Okang Dukuzumurenyi 28 Views • 5 years ago

As the world has been transfixed by the opioid crisis in North America, another crisis, just as serious, has been unfolding almost unreported across Africa.

The addictive prescription painkiller Tramadol has exploded in popularity, used by everyone from workers trying to cope with long hours and grueling labor, to university students looking to have a good time. It’s even the drug of choice for members of Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram, fueling their violence.

Now, governments are threatening to crack down, using the same War on Drugs methods of repression that have failed everywhere else. And meanwhile, as counterfeit pills flood the continent, new research is questioning whether people are even taking real Tramadol at all.

In The War On Drugs, we examine the social implications of prohibition worldwide. Any attempt to shut down the trade in drugs such as heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine or weed invariably sets off a chain of events that just makes things worse, leaving a trail of death, illness, violence, slavery, addiction, crime and inequality across the globe. Everyone loses – except, in a weird kind of way, the drugs themselves.
