Even when we study the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, which is important to study, we can’t start in 1619 or in the 1440s when the Portuguese get involved. We have to understand the history chronologically and deal with the 800 year occupation of Europe by the Africans known as the Moors who enter into the Iberian Peninsula, today known as Spain and Portugal, from North Africa in 711A.D. This course not only deals with the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade but thousands of years of history that leads up to the Slave Trade of African people taking place.Aug. 20th, 2019 marked the 400th year Anniversary of the "20 and odd Africans" who came into Point Comfort on Aug. 20th, 1619 in what would later be called the colony of Virginia. This year was known as "The Year Of Return" as many African Americans are reconnecting to Africa and traveling to Ghana and other West African countries. When we discuss the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade we have to first understand that African people are the Original people of North, Central & South America & have been in the land we call U.S. at least 51,700 years.

Adapted from pieces the original Black Man's Land Trilogy, looking at Kenya's history from colonialism to independence, this film deals with the arrival of the first European settlers towards the end of the 19th century and explains how, over a period of time, the African inhabitants were deprived of much of their land. It charts the actions of the Imperial British East Africa Company and uses quotes from both official letters and private journals to reveal the motives of those who sought to make Kenya an extension of Britain without the inclusion of Kenya.
The film also features footage from BBC One that looks at the lives of the Grants, a family who moved to Kenya at the beginning of its early history as a colony. And delves into what it was like to be a British Family living in the Kenyan Colony
It also recalls the treatment the Africans received at the hands of their colonial masters and discusses the founding of the first political protest movement, led by Harry Thuku, and also discusses the little told stoy of Muthoni Nyanjiri who led the first revolt against the British in an attempt to free him. Harry Thuku is one of the individuals interviewed and whose funeral in 1970 opens and closes the film. The documentary makes good use of a rare collection of photographs of the period.
It's hard to believe but silver was at one time worth more than gold. China used silver as their currency and the West had to pay in silver for Chinese goods. This angered the British and so they sought a commodity that the Chinese would be forced to buy. China did not covet any goods that the West had except one: Opium.

Great song from a great African woman, set to the pictures of a great African civilization - The people of the Surma and Mursi tribes.
Tribal Decoration of the Omo Valley - Pictures by: Hans Silvester (Africa on Lens)
The people of the Surma and Mursi tribes live in the Omo Valley of Southern Ethiopia are body painters: they paint their bodies with pigments made from the earth as an immemorial and quotidian practice mothers paint babies, children and adults paint themselves and each other in a tradition that seems unchanged for thousands of years. Their paintings range from abstract designs of circles, lines, dots and swirls, sometimes focused on specific body parts, to all-over patterns of flowers, zig-zags and fingerprints that form a dazzling array on the entire body. White, yellow, orange and ochre; the natural pigments that they use are derived from the soil and rocks of their surroundings. The tribes daily paintings are an essential expression of their lives more elemental to them than music or dance. Fascinated by the Surma and Mursi tribes painting practices and astounded by the beauty of their ephemeral art.
Silvester captures the diverse and extraordinary effects that they achieve through their ancient tradition.

Kumbukeni is joined by our brothers Michael Thompson and Sidney Nicholas, of Our Black Truth, popularly known as OBT Social to discuss the state of the internet in Nsi ya Ubuntu, what the barriers are and how we can dissolve them to make way for progress.
Mr. Michael Thompson is a technologist who has been in the business since he was a sophomore in high school in Northern Virginia starting with AT&T Communications in 1984. After leaving AT&T after graduating high school, he worked for Quantum Computer Services who later changed their name to AOL, America Online, one of the first online companies in the world. After leaving AOL he went to work for UUNET Technologies, one of only a handful of specialists in the business of building a national network to link individuals and companies to the Internet. During his time at UUNET Mr. Thompson was part of the team that helped build the Microsoft network and beta test Windows 95. During his tenure, he received numerous technical certifications with companies like Cisco, Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, Lucent and many others. After leaving UUNET Technologies he went to work as a consultant where he helped to design and implement networks for the U.S. Federal government, telecoms and various fortune 500 companies around the world. Mr. Thompson, then started a company called “Food on the Move”, which delivered food from restaurants throughout Northern Virginia. Food on the Move was later sold. Then around 1999, Mr. Thompson sold his video streaming company called “StreamNow” to a telco, which was soon acquired by Bell Atlantic, who then changed their name to Verizon and he served as Vice President of Video Services. As the VP, he was the first person to host a meeting demonstrating video streaming technology in 2001 to all of the major movie studios including Warner Bros, Disney, Sony, MGM, DreamWorks, New Line Cinema and many others. After leaving Verizon, Mr. Thompson again consulted for various government agencies and fortune 500 companies for a number of years and started other businesses. Then around 2019, he decided to build a social media platform because of the unfair treatment and discrimination we were experiencing on the major platforms. Once the platform was completed, it was named “Our Black Truth” which was later shortened to “OBT Social” because there were those who were offended by the name and what the platform stood for. Today, OBT Social has more than 6 platforms, that span more than 190 countries and is connected to the internet at the fastest speeds possible and has servers housed at what is called “Data Center Alley”, Ashburn, Virginia. This is the areas in which he grew up and it is said that more than 70% of the world’s internet traffic flows through this city and no other place in the world has more data centers or internet connectivity.
Sidney Nicholas currently serves as the VP of Marketing for OBT Social and the CEO of the consulting firm AtumIQ. With a background in marketing technology, he specializes in marketing psychology and data analytics. Born and raised just outside of Detroit, MI, Sidney developed a passion for technology at an early age. He pursued business studies with a marketing focus in his post-secondary education and subsequently worked in the marketing departments of various organizations, including corporate entities and SMBs. Throughout his professional career, Sidney initiated studies in psychology, becoming a trainer in NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and other tools related to psychology, persuasion, and personal development. He considers himself Pan-African and believes that Africa's advancement is crucial for all Afro-descendant people worldwide.
TV special report from 1968 of the Biafran War.from WikipediaThe Nigerian Civil War, commonly known as the Biafran War (6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970), was a war fought between the government of Nigeria and the secessionist state of Biafra. Biafra represented nationalist aspirations of the Igbo people, whose leadership felt they could no longer coexist with the Northern-dominated federal government. The conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded Britain's formal decolonization of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963. Immediate causes of the war in 1966 included a military coup, a counter-coup and persecution of Igbo living in Northern Nigeria. Control over the lucrative oil production in the Niger Delta played a vital strategic role.Within a year, the Federal Government troops surrounded Biafra, capturing coastal oil facilities and the city of Port Harcourt. The blockade imposed during the ensuing stalemate led to severe famine. During the two and half years of the war, there were about 100,000 overall military casualties, while between 500,000 and 2 million Biafran civilians died of starvation.[31]In mid-1968, images of malnourished and starving Biafran children saturated the mass media of Western countries. The plight of the starving Biafrans became a cause célèbre in foreign countries, enabling a significant rise in the funding and prominence of international non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Britain and the Soviet Union were the main supporters of the Nigerian government in Lagos, while France, Israel and some other countries supported Biafra. France and Israel provided weapons to both combatants.
