Fusion power is the "Holy Grail" of energy, and the first country to successful deploy fusion power at scale will upend the economic order of the world.

In under two decades, China's nuclear power industry went from functionally zero, to at least fifteen years ahead of the United States in most metrics. China now leads the global field in research, and in the number and types of reactors currently under construction. China's supply chain dominance also ensures that virtually all the components and parts are domestically sourced.

Last month, a Shanghai company announced a successful test of their newest fusion reactor, and created plasma for the first time. Their reactor is much smaller than Western types, and can be built in under 4 years, instead of 30, and for just 5% of the cost of European or American designs.

China's national plans call for rollouts of fusion reactor prototypes by 2035, and economy-wide installations by 2050. If China meets these targets, while the United States and Europe are still racing to catch up, the industrial and economic advantages to China may be irreversible and permanent.

The event followed a now familiar pattern: a small convoy of dusty 4x4 vehicles drove on to the edge of the airstrip at Galkayo in Puntland, north-central Somalia; armed security guards took up watchful positions nearby and a number of bemused-looking men stepped gingerly from the cars and lined up to have their photographs taken by the media.

On this occasion there were 11 of them; all had been hostages until that morning. They were sailors from a Malaysian cargo vessel that had been hijacked by Somali pirates a few years ago and held until a ransom was paid for their release.

One of them gave a brief account of what had happened. "On November 26, 2010 our ship was hijacked in the Indian Ocean. Their demand was 20 million. After that, they threatened the owner. You now increase money or we will shoot the crew. The owner didn't increase the money and then one Indian is shot with just three bullets. Then they hit us and tortured us. Tell your family to bring us money, otherwise we will kill you!"

The crew had been held for three and a half years but they were the fortunate ones. Five of their crew mates had died in that time. Now the survivors were going home and a UN plane with two envoys on board was flying in to see them to safety.

Such scenes have become relatively commonplace in Galkayo in recent times. Eighty percent of global trade is carried by sea and Somalia sits on a key maritime route linking Europe and Asia. More than 18,000 ships pass its shores every year. Over the past decade, Somali pirates, often former fishermen whose traditional livelihoods have been destroyed by foreign trawlers and toxic waste dumping, have attacked more than 300 vessels and kidnapped 700 people.

Faced with such a threat, the international community responded aggressively. In 2008, European states, the US and others began sending naval forces to these seas. They are still there today - warships, planes and helicopters patrolling thousands of square miles and doing a fair job of keeping the hijackers at bay. The UN and others have also played an increasing role in facilitating negotiations for the release of hostages - such as those set free at places such as Galkayo - for whose liberty large ransoms have been paid.

But if the problem is now slowly coming under control in Somalia, the same cannot be said for other parts of the world where piracy is on the increase. Lawlessness, desperation, poverty, greed and even political radicalism have brought the phenomenon to the waters of South America, Asia and, perhaps most aggressively, to West Africa.

In an effort to understand the reasons why, Bertrand Monnet, a French academic and filmmaker, has been travelling to piracy hot spots around the coast of Africa. In an extraordinary and very tense series of encounters, he came to face to face with heavily armed pirate gangs operating in and around the Niger Delta, where Nigeria's huge offshore oil industry, which employs thousands of expatriates, offers rich ransom pickings. It gradually became clear that piracy in West Africa has many of the same root causes as piracy in Somalia and elsewhere, not least of which is that those who don't share in the benefits and profits of global trade have ever fewer reasons these days to respect the security of those who do.

Research and Development (R&D) is a major profit center for the top universities in the United States. Besides the nearly $100 billion they earn in grants from the US government and private sources, university-based researchers create patents and inventions that generate many more billions annually.

China is the largest foreign source of scientists and researchers, and they are concentrated in the hard sciences and in engineering, where over 95% of R&D spending takes place. But since 2018, Chinese scientists are increasingly deciding to return to China to set up new research departments. Of those who are still in the US, over 60% admit they are strongly considering moving, and over half now refuse to work on projects that involve funding by US government sources.

To American universities, the loss of these scientists, along with future contributions to scientific research and commercial applications and market value, are incalculable. But losses probably already exceed a trillion dollars, given the departures of so many top scientists in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, medicine, biochemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, and quantum computing.

In ancient Africa religion, the concept of the divine spark, or ba and ka, represented the individual's spiritual essence and their potential for attaining a higher state of consciousness. According to this belief, each person was born with a spark of divine energy that was a part of the universal life force, but this spark has to be awakened and cultivated in order to reach its full potential. Vilified in some quarters as a racist and demagogue, Jeffries has also been hailed as an educator who uses his classroom to raise the consciousness of African Americans. His career as chairman of the Department of African-American Studies at the City College of New York has “given a sense of urgency to the notion of expanding African-American studies in classrooms everywhere,” according to Emerge correspondent Michael H. Cottman. “It also has highlighted the growing concern for … black scholars who are now subject to ridicule and branded as incompetents and anti-Semites, as well as being second-guessed by those who object to blacks reexamining world history and offering a dramatically different perspective on the African impact on society.”In his capacity as a college professor and also as a speaker in public forums, Jeffries has stood as an exponent of several controversial theories: that the presence of different levels of melanin—a skin coloration pigment—has caused biological and psychological differences between blacks and whites; that the slave trade was run and financed by wealthy Europeans, including Jews; and that Africa’s role as a force in the creation of modern Western civilization has been systematically undermined by white, Eurocentric historians.Leonard Jeffries was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, the older of two sons in a close-knit blue-collar family. “It was an extraordinarily happy home,” he recalled in New York. “I grew up with the idea of becoming a lawyer to save the race in the civil-rights movement and to be mayor of Newark.” Like other black youngsters coming of age in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Jeffries faced racism from his white schoolmates as well as from some of his teachers, but he buried his rage and strove to excel. He was popular enough to be elected president of his grammar school class and later president of his high school class.Jeffries won a scholarship to Lafayette College and arrived there in 1955 as one of four black students on the campus that year. An honors student almost from the outset of his undergraduate years, he decided to pledge the only fraternity on campus that would accept black members: Pi Lambda Phi, the Jewish fraternity. He was accepted and spent the last three years at Lafayette rooming with Jewish friends and participating actively in the fraternity’s affairs. “The Jews in that frat operated on the African value system—communal, cooperative, and collective,” Jeffries recounted in New York. “It was us against the world. We had very strong relationships because I was the leader…. I was trying to make them men.”In his senior year Jeffries was named president of Pi Lambda Phi, the first black in history to hold that position in the fraternity. The honor further helped to defray his college expenses by paying for his food and lodging. It also provided Jeffries with an ironic title that amused him greatly. “They called the president a Rex—I had to go through college as king of the Jews,” he told New York. “But I managed it. I managed it. Me and my Jews knew what we were about.”Graduating with honors in 1959, Jeffries won a Rotary International fellowship to study at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. Upon his return to New York in 1961 he enrolled in the graduate program at Columbia University’s School of International Affairs. As he worked toward his master’s and doctorate degrees, he supported himself by working for Operation Crossroads Africa, a private organization that developed community projects in Africa. Jeffries’s association with Operation Crossroads Africa provided him with opportunities to spend time in Guinea, Mali, Senegal, and the Ivory Coast.
